Welcome!
We would like to introduce ourselves. We are the Year 3 teachers, Ms Young (Mon/Tues) and Mrs Walters (Wed/Thurs/Fri.) We both hope that you have all had a wonderful summer holiday and would like to welcome your children to Year 3! Â
We were thrilled with how all the children seemed to settle straight into Year 3 on our transition days and we are confident that they will all thrive with us this year. However, if there are any issues around settling in, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us (catching us after school or by leaving a message at the office is usually best as mornings tend to be quite hectic!)Â
Learning
Year 3 is a fun year in which the children will build on their learning and develop their confidence and sense of self. We know that many parents like to have an idea of what their children will be learning each term, so please find attached a summary of our learning this half term. If you have any questions about the learning or would like any more information, please let us know. 😊Â
HomeworkÂ
As they did in Year 2, children will be expected to do some learning at home. This need not take a lot of time but is a great habit to get into and will really support them as they transition through the years and on to secondary school (where the homework expectation is much higher!) Â
Reading - We recommend that children read with you at least three times a week. Children’s reading impacts on their success in school and beyond and has been linked to improved confidence, creativity and better mental health, so any additional reading children can be doing at home will be of huge benefit to them.Â
Spelling – The children will be given approximately 10 words to learn each week and will be tested every Friday. The majority of the words will be related to the ‘spelling rule’ that we will be learning in Spelling lessons that week, although there will be some ‘trickier’ words that do not fit in with these rules. These will be highlighted in a different colour. Learning spellings can really boost children’s confidence with their writing so any practising of spellings that you can do at home/on the bus/in the car would be really beneficial!Â
Times tables – Learning times tables facts is so important for children. It gives them a huge amount of confidence in their Maths and supports them both now and right the way through primary and secondary school. Knowing their times tables facts helps them with multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, estimating, mathematical problem solving and reasoning and much more. Encouraging them to practise reciting the facts, testing them and/or supporting them to play on Times Tables Rockstars would all be helpful. Practice sheets are available to take home for anyone who would like them.Â
Homework tasks – As well as reading and learning spellings and times tables, children will be given homework tasks to complete each week. This should not take more than 20-30 minutes. Children should not be worried if there is anything that they are unsure of within the homework as we will always go through it as a class and they will have an opportunity to ask questions about anything they are unsure of, however, we would ask you to encourage them to do their best to complete the homework each week as this is a great discipline to develop.
General informationÂ
Toys/collector cards/keyrings/jewellery - Children should not bring any of these items to school as they can cause distractions and sometimes arguments. If it is deemed, by our SENDCo, that your child would benefit from some specific equipment in class, this will be approved and provided by Mr Curtis. No other toys, fidgets or equipment should be brought to school.Â
Trips/assemblies - We will inform you as the year progresses of any trips, class assemblies or events that will be taking place.Â
We are looking forward to getting to know all the children this year and to watching them learn and grow!Â
Best wishes,Â
Ms Young and Mrs WaltersÂ
